Frequently asked questions

A clear starting point for counsel.

Every assignment is different, but these are the questions that most often come up before the first conversation.

Who does Crossroads work with?

Crossroads works in support of Texas criminal defense attorneys and defense teams. Services are counsel-directed and tailored to the legal decision, hearing, negotiation, or case-development need in front of the team.

When should counsel bring Crossroads into a case?

Earlier is usually better, but a late referral can still be useful. Crossroads can assist during case development, plea negotiations, sentencing preparation, supervision or revocation proceedings, post-conviction work, and other time-sensitive stages.

Does every referral require a comprehensive mitigation investigation?

No. Some matters call for comprehensive development; others need a focused assessment, chronology, witness development, systems analysis, expert coordination, or preparation for a specific hearing. The scope is built around the question counsel needs answered.

What does counsel receive from a mitigation assignment?

The engagement identifies the products counsel needs: for example, a focused findings memorandum, social-history or records chronology, collateral interview memoranda, mitigation report, sentencing packet, or treatment and community-support plan. Materials distinguish documented facts, reported accounts, working interpretations and unresolved gaps. Reports and packets are prepared for counsel’s review and intended use.

How does this differ from collecting character letters?

Character letters may be useful supporting material, but an investigation develops the underlying history and circumstances. Crossroads gathers relevant records, interviews people with firsthand knowledge, compares accounts, checks supporting and contrary evidence, and organizes the findings around counsel’s question. Accountability, restitution, treatment participation and rehabilitation are documented where relevant and supported, rather than simply asserted.

Can Crossroads investigate circumstances surrounding the alleged offense?

Yes, within the scope and boundaries set by counsel. An assignment may examine the client’s reported role, pressure or coercion, relationships, functioning, and discrepancies in the available evidence. Counsel directs whether and how offense-related questions are explored and determines their legal relevance. Mitigation work does not require a blanket admission of disputed allegations.

Does Crossroads provide diagnoses or promise a reduced sentence?

No. Crossroads develops information and practical case-support materials; clinical diagnoses and specialist opinions require appropriately qualified independent professionals. Counsel decides the legal strategy and requested relief. Any outcome remains dependent on the case, applicable Texas law and the decision-maker.

How are scope, timing, and fees determined?

After an initial consultation, Crossroads identifies the priorities, available time, likely sources, and intended deliverables. Counsel then receives a defined scope and fee structure before substantive work begins.

Can I send confidential records through the website?

No. The inquiry form is only for an initial, nonconfidential contact. Please don’t include identifying details, privileged information, case records, or attachments. A secure exchange method can be established after the matter and engagement are confirmed.
